Information meeting on Sunday, July 11, 1:00 p.m. at Simpson United Methodist Church, 2740 1st Ave. S, Minneapolis
(located at the corner of 1st Ave. and 28th St. S, one block east of Nicollet Ave.).
The purpose of this program is to bring together women from the U.S. with women from Guatemala to share and learn from one another about the differences and similarities of their lives based upon the cultures in which they live. The groups will come together for several days in the village where the Guatemalan women live to spend time learning, discussing, and working together.
Each U.S. woman will be paired with a Guatemalan hostess. She will gain first-hand experience of a woman's daily life in rural Guatemala. This time will include visiting the market, cooking, cleaning, and participating in the regular daily activities with the hostess. In the afternoons the full group will come together with a facilitator to discuss various issues facing women in Guatemala while working together
to create a quilt or weaving. This project will not only be a product of the time shared in labor and learning, but a representation of the bond formed between all of the participating women. The quilt will return with the women to the U.S. to be sold and the profits returned to the Guatemalan women's group to support a community development project of their choosing.
Objectives: 1) Build relationships between women of Guatemala and the United States
2) Cultural exchange and improved understanding of shared and distinct issues for women in Guatemala
3) Move beyond the role of observer to that of participant to gain first-hand experience of the rural indigenous Mayan Guatemalan living situation.
